Quakes Hit Indonesia’s Sumatra Island
Jakarta, Indonesia-On Wednesday, An earth quake hit Indonesia’s northwest island of Sumatra early, giving signal of tsunami warning and informing residents over there to rush for higher places. Although the earth quake was higher but reports are showing minor damage in most of areas.
Earth quake start at 5:15 Am and it reach at coastal area in Sibloga in Sumatra with a reactor of 7.8. Indonesia’s Geophysics Agency and Meteorology issued warning for quake but lifted two hours late. A hospital on Simeulue island share news of injuries of 17 people said Capt. Ajas Siagian, a deputy area police chief.
Reporters bring news that dozens of collapsed and minor damage in Teupah Selatan village. There were not much larger damage to building but electricity knocked out on island. Earth quake epicenter close buildings and houses, especially in closest to epicenter. Reporter says that we collect information from far flung areas.
Local Metro Tv report for damage of one woman who get injured while rushing from the house after fire burn. There was also news for 14 houses burn in Medan, the capital, North Sumatra. Five aftershocks measuring upto 5.2 were recorded, meterology agency said. The quake hit Medan when people were looking for their morning prayers. Electricity cut in Banda Aceh and Medan which is capital of Aceh and other areas.
People in cities like Sinabang on Simeulue Island and Gunung Sitoli poured into streets and rushed to higher places after the quake. According to a resident Eddy Effendi” Rumors create panicked villagers near beach”. People ran on their bikes and cars to climb on the hills. Panic and chaos was everywhere that damage or injure village.
People living in Sibolga said the quake lasted for more than a minute and knocked down utility poles in area. Quake was felt even in Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur, about 320 miles away. In 2004 tsunami killed 230,000 people in dozen countries on the Indian Ocean basin on the reactor scale of 9.2.
